The role of the English language.

English is an international language, spoken in many countries both as a native and as a second or foreign language. One out of five people can speak or at least understand English. English is the official language of 53 countries. It is spoken habitually in the United States, the British Isles, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of South Africa, Liberia, and many territories under the United Kingdom and the United States of America. It is estimated that 300 million people speak English as a second language, and an additional 100 million people use it fluently as a foreign language. As a rough estimate, one billion people around the world have some knowledge of English, either as a native language, as a second language, or as a foreign language. English is the associate official language of India which has over a billion people. English is the chief foreign language taught in the schools of Europe, South America, Asia and Africa.

English is the language of the media industry. If a person speaks English, they won’t need to rely on translations and subtitles anymore to enjoy their favourite books, songs, films and TV shows. It is also the language of the Internet. Many websites are written in English — a person may be able to understand them and to take part in forums and discussions. English is the language of science, of aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. Knowing English increases a person’s chances of getting agood job in a multinational company within a home country or of finding work abroad. In today’s competitive world, students need skills that will equip them for a fast-changing work environment. Technical and communication skills are highly desired by companies and the need for proficiency in English is becoming essential for many posts. Throughout the world, when people from different nationalities want to communicate, they commonly use the English language.
