THE SEARCH FOR LIFE ON MARS.
Are we alone in the universe? People have always wondered whether there is (or was) life on other planets in our solar system. Since 1964, NASA has been interested in finding out more about Mars, the nearest planet to Earth. In 1975, NASA landed two spacecraft — Viking 1 and 2 — on Mars. The spacecraft sent pictures back to Earth from the surface of the planet.

In 2001, NASA sent another spacecraft to Mars. Mars Odyssey entered Mars's orbit on October 24,2001. Its mission was to look for water on the surface of the planet. The spacecraft orbited the planet and sent pictures back to NASA scientists. Odyssey found evidence that Mars has ice underneath its surface, which indicates that Mars used to have lakes and rivers. If there was water, there may also have been life.

In November 2011, NASA sent a rover called Curiosity to Mars. It landed on Mars on August 6, 2012. Curiosity's mission is to check whether there has ever been life on Mars, and to study more about the planet. Curiosity has many instruments to help it complete its mission. It has cameras to take pictures, lasers to get rock samples, and an x-ray machine to get detailed information about the planet's surface. Since landing on the planet, Curiosity has sent a lot of information to NASA scientists. They now have further evidence that Mars could have supported life in the past.
