Exercise #29: Summary Writing - Level 1.
Task: Read each passage, then summarize it objectively in writing.
1 1. The Emperor penguin is the largest penguin in the world, standing on average
2 45 inches tall. To survive the harsh Antarctic winters, they huddle together for
3 warmth. This cooperative behavior is unique in the animal world. The female
4 gives birth to one egg, then leaves it behind with the male as she goes off in
5 search of food. Food is in the ocean, often a 30-mile walk from the rookery.

1 2. Leonardo Da Vinci was born in the hilltop town of Vinci on April 15, 1452. He
2 was a polymath, a man who was an expert in many different subject areas. Da
3 Vinci is famous for his inventions, such as the flying machine and the para-
4 chute. He was a genius far ahead of his time, yet most of his invention never
5 left the drawing board. He never married and died in 1519 at the age of 67.

1 3. Inventory is a business word that describes the total amount of goods or
2 material that a company has on hand. Taking inventory means counting those
3 goods and material. Taking inventory is an essential business practice. Facto-
4 ry owners, for example, need to know how many finished products are availa-
5 ble for sale and if they have the material to build more products. Car dealers
6 often have high inventory. To move their old inventory, they often have sales,
7 particularly at the end of the year when new car models are arriving.
