This book will give you a general overview of the entire field of biology. Use it as your only source, or use it as a portal into some of its interesting stories, but either way, you’ll learn things that will deepen your understanding of your own world and that can put into context some of the new information about discoveries and threats to our health and ecosystem that you hear about in the news.
Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of biology.

Greek Science.
Slowly but surely, man's knowledge of and command over the natural world developed through history. Humans learned to master the use of fire. By mastering fire, they could stay in one place all year—they didn't have to pack up and leave just to stay warm. They learned how to grow and harvest crops, and how to domesticate animals. Growing crops and having your own livestock meant that you didn't have to spend all day searching for food—you had to pay attention to it, but with care, it would be right at your fingertips.
These advances made it possible for people to survive and support themselves, and still have some time left over in the day. And they could spend this time on what we now call leisure activities, including the pursuit of knowledge for knowledge's sake. They were so curious about the world around them that chasing down the answers became their leisure hobby, or even their full-time careers.
Nowhere was this more true than in ancient Greece, which boasted several full-time scientists. Ironically, although the ancient Greeks did much to advance the field of science, they also stalled it in some ways.
