No doubt, the newly enrolled students for this course may find struggling to understand the basics of techniques in bioscience as there is a lack of appropriate support in the literature on this topic. The book entitled ‘Introduction to Bioscience’ has been written keeping this in view. With this in mind, the rationale of this book is to supply the students with an easy to use reference book that will provide the students with a basis for understanding the basic bioscience techniques that the students come across in their studies. The book provides the foundation of biosciences techniques to make it a novice course book for the students as well as teachers. The content of the book follow the latest curriculum prescribed by the universities for B. Tech. courses.

Cell Structure and Function.
Organisms are made up of one or more cells. Many organisms consist of just one cell. They are cabled unicellular organisms e.g., Amoeba, Euglena, Chlamydomanas, etc. There are other organisms which are composed of many cells. These are called multicellular organisms. Higher animals and plants are the examples of multicellular organisms. The body of a 60 kg, adult human being has about 100 trillion (100 x 1012) cells. A drop of blood contains several million cells. The large sized organisms do not have large sized cells, instead they possess higher number of cells.
The study of form, structure and composition of cells is called cytology. The branch of biology that deals with various aspects of structure, chemistry, development, genetics and functioning of cells is called cell biology. In cell biology, scientists study fundamental processes that are common to all cells. Hence, cell biology appears to be a unifying subject and studying cell biology in some sense the same as studying life.
