   Read this book if you want to run an email server for a small organization, for yourself and your friends, or just you. This book will not prepare you to run email for a global enterprise or a large mailing list, but it will provide a foundation for you to study those advanced cases.




TLS and Email.
You’ve probably seen all sorts of recommendations for TLS configurations: disabling weak ciphers, disabling TLS 1.0, 1.1, and all versions of SSL, and so on. Those recommendations are great for web sites, but irrelevant for server-to-server SMTP on the public Internet.

Primordial SMTP did not use any encryption. Once the Internet was turned over to commercial interests, however, law enforcement became interested in email. In 1997, the FBI’s Carnivore large-scale packet capture system sparked an interest in SMTP encryption. That led to the creation of STARTTLS, which lets unencrypted connections convert to TLS without creating a new TCP connection or using a different TCP port. When a client connects to an SMTP server, the server declares what features it supports. If STARTTLS is among them, the client can say “Before we do anything let’s switch to TLS,” or it can proceed without TLS. This is often called opportunistic TLS. STARTTLS became a standard in 1999. Not changing SMTP’s port numbers permitted a gradual rollout of TLS across the Internet.
