China is an enormous country, with many different regions … and many different cultures. Inner Mongolia, in the north of China, is an expansive region, with thousands of kilometres of grasslands and high mountains. These lands have inspired a number of traditions over the years like the Naadam Festival. There are all kinds of games at this festival; games of great skill and courage and horse races! The Mongols are famous for their abilities on horseback. The games they play today are the same games they played eight centuries ago.
A Cool experiment.
Every year global temperatures are rising. What does this mean for our planet? Will the ice at the North and South Pole melt completely? Are we going to have more storms and floods?
Eric Gustafson, an 11-year-old American scientist, wants to know why this is happening. First, he looked at the science behind it. The Earth absorbs light from the sun, which warms up the surface. Then the heat goes back into the atmosphere. Gases like CO2 and methane absorb it and warm up our environment. These are called greenhouse gases and they are produced by ... guess who? Humans.
How much impact do we really have on the environment? Eric has a plan. He’s going to build four greenhouses, each with an ice statue. He’ll fill one box with CO2, one with methane, and two with normal air. First, they build the greenhouses, carefully and accurately. Each box must be the same. The only thing that will be different is the gas inside each box. They’ll need special machines to make the ice statues. These machines are powerful and precise.
