Conjugation of -ar verbs.
All verbs in Portuguese fall into three main groups, plus a group of irregular verbs which don’t follow normal rules or patterns. Th e fi rst group of regular verbs, referred to as “fi rst-conjugation verbs,” all end in -ar. Th e infi nitive form of a regular verb, such as saltar (to jump), consists of the stem salt and the ending -ar. Th e infi nitive form tells the meaning of the verb, “to jump;” it does not tell you who is jumping. In Portuguese, to show who is carrying out the action, you have to conjugate the verb (change the endings of the verbs for each person). Look at the pattern below for the present tense of -ar verbs.
