The goals of economics.
Most economists would agree that the characteristic point of view of modern economics was born with Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. Since then, economists have sought to explain the behavior of the economic system as an interacting mechanism. Smith concerned himself with the interdependence of wages. profits, rents, prices, money, and capital accumulation. These are the same topics which primarily interest economists today. The long-range goal most economists recognize as central to the discipline is the development of an understanding of precisely how the economic system operates - the mechanisms by which resources are allocated, prices determined, income distributed, and economic growth takes place Although other social sciences are, of course, related
to the functioning of the economy, economists have for the most part confined themselves to studying the highly interdependent variables within the economic system.

Economic theory represents the core of the discipline. The aim of the theorist is to develop models of the economy, using a relatively small number of economic variables to explain observed phenomenon. As economic theory has grown more abstract, considerable attention has been devoted to studying the operation of different types of economic models under various conditions. The growing sophistication of economic theory has led to a growing concern with the formal testing of hypotheses, in terms of carefully constructed bodies of data and elaborate statistical analysis. To an increasing extent, economists have been striving for a theoretical-quantitative discipline which can unify abstract model-building with empirical analysis.
